We get this question at the shop almost every day. Someone walks in with a logo and a stack of shirts and asks, “Should I embroider these or screen print them?” The honest answer is: it depends on the garment, the quantity, and how you want it to feel. Let’s break it down the way we’d explain it across the counter.
Start with the garment, not the decoration
This trips people up more than anything. Screen printing loves a flat, smooth surface — think t-shirts, hoodies, and tote bags. The ink sits on top of the fabric and looks crisp and bold. Embroidery, on the other hand, needs a fabric that can hold a stitch without puckering. Polos, jackets, hats, and structured workwear are its sweet spot.
So if you brought us a thin summer tee, we’ll probably steer you toward a transfer or screen print. If you brought us a polo or a hat, embroidery is almost always the move. The garment tells us a lot before we even look at the logo.
Quantity changes everything
Here’s where the numbers matter. Embroidery at our shop has no minimum order — we can stitch one hat or one polo if that’s all you need. Screen printing is a bulk process, so it has a 48-piece minimum per design. That’s not us being difficult; it’s just how the ink and screens physically work.
For small runs or a single design on a few shirts, DTF heat transfers are the middle ground — full color, great detail, and a low 6-piece minimum. We use all three methods here on Water Street, so we’ll point you to the one that actually fits your order.
How it feels and wears
Screen print sits flat against the fabric and stays soft, especially on larger areas like a full chest or back print. Embroidery has texture and weight — you can feel the stitching, which reads as premium and professional on a polo or jacket. Both last a long time when they’re done right.
If you want your team to look polished and professional, embroidery usually wins. If you want bold, colorful graphics on a stack of tees for an event, screen printing is the call.
Still not sure? Bring it in
Honestly, the fastest way to decide is to walk in with your garment and your logo. We’ll look at both, show you samples, and tell you straight which method will look better and cost less. No pressure, no upsell — just the answer you’d get from a real production shop.
You can find us at 19 S Water Street in Henderson, Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. Or send us your artwork and we’ll quote it both ways.
