Why We Love DTF Transfers for Small Runs and Big Colors

    August 25, 2026|5 min read

Direct-to-Film — DTF for short — is the newest tool in our shop and honestly one of the most useful. It fills the gap between embroidery and screen printing that used to leave small orders stuck. If you’ve got a colorful design and you don’t need a thousand shirts, this is the part you’ll want to know about.

    What DTF actually is

We print your full-color design onto a special film, then heat-press it onto the garment. The result is a soft, flexible print that holds fine detail and gradients better than screen printing can — and it works on fabrics that embroidery would struggle with.

Because there are no screens to set up, the cost-per-piece stays reasonable even on smaller runs. That’s the whole appeal.

    Where DTF shines

Photographic logos, gradients, tiny text, and one-off personalized names — these are the jobs DTF eats for breakfast. It’s perfect for team jerseys where everyone has a different name and number, or for a brand that wants a complex multi-color design on a small drop of shirts.

It also grips tricky fabrics like polyester blends well, which is why it’s popular for activewear and performance tees.

How it compares to your other options

Embroidery: no minimum, premium feel, but it can’t do fine color detail. Screen printing: bold and cheap at volume, but 48-piece minimum and limited color blends. DTF: full color, fine detail, 6-piece minimum. Each has its lane.

We don’t push one method over another — we use whichever fits your design, your fabric, and your order size. Sometimes that’s all three on the same job.

    Want to see the difference?

The easiest way to understand DTF is to feel a sample. We keep printed examples at the shop. Stop by Water Street, or send us your design and we’ll show you how it’d look on your garment.
